Foster Program

Foster parents are the rescue heroes that allow us to help even more animals within the community! Remember, just one cat in a foster home allows us to rescue another and bring him/her into our adoption program.

Foster Program Overview:

Why do these sweet animals need foster care?

  • They are too young and/or underweight to be placed up for adoption

  • They are a momma and her nursing animals who need a home environment where they can feel safe and receive proper care and socialization

  • They need time to recuperate from an illness or injury (we provide all the medical care and medications, of course!)

  • They experienced stress in the shelter environment, and having them in a home makes them feel more secure

  • They are shy and need a little extra TLC

What qualifications do I need to have to become a foster parent?

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Have basic knowledge of pet care and behavior

  • Provide transportation to and from the vet for vaccination appointments or any specialized care if needed

  • Provide daily care, feeding, and any necessary medications as prescribed by our shelter staff (food and meds will be provided)

  • In some cases, have an area where you can keep your foster cat isolated from your own companion animals

  • Be able to commit enough time to socialize your foster animal and give them lots of TLC

  • Agree to a Foster Home Inspection, which is required by the Dept. of Agriculture and takes about five minutes to complete

  • Have a flexible schedule to allow time for routine veterinary exams and vaccinations, as well as any emergencies that may occur

I am interested in saving lives as a foster parent, what do I need to do next?

  • Fill out and submit the PDF application on this page to the Adoption Center.

  • Once you are approved, an HSBR staff member will contact you about scheduling the required Dept. of Agriculture home inspection and you will be asked to sign the Dept. of Agriculture Foster Agreement

  • Once everything is complete, we will work with you to find the perfect foster pet
